About the data

  • Earthquakes from magnitude 3 up to 100 km from the nearest of Georgia's towns and resorts, and from magnitude 4.5 up to 200 km.
  • The lists come from the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), which records quakes here from about magnitude 4, and from the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which gathers the region's seismic networks, Georgia's among them, and records quakes from about magnitude 3. A quake that both list is shown once, as USGS gives it.
  • Smaller earthquakes may be missing, and a new quake's magnitude and place can change as seismologists review it.
  • Where a Georgian town or resort lies within 50 km, a quake is placed from it; otherwise in its source's own words.
  • The letters after a magnitude name its scale: ML local, mb body-wave, Mw moment magnitude. For one quake, the scales can differ by a few tenths.
  • Times are Tbilisi time, and depths are below the surface.

Georgia's National Seismic Monitoring Centre, at Ilia State University, publishes its own list of earthquakes in and around Georgia: Seismic activity.
